Nick Owen to be assistant coach/ keeper!? Any truth big O?
Well the truth is that I have been training as a keeper but it isn't an attempt to become our senior keeper. I could be the reserve keeper so that we wouldn't have to drag a young second keeper on the road every second week only to not get a game but that remains to be seen. Josh Smith has had an operation but he should be good to go shortly. We haven't had any other keepers turn up as yet. Keepers are pretty rare. Would love to see another keeper or 2 show up. Until then I'll just keep dominating in the sticks during training.
Have you dropped to number 3 keeper now Owen?
Rumour has it that the young Ulvy boys playing with Dev, J.Stone and B.Mann, have dropped some quality and dedication since they have had ladies arrive into their lives, as they are struggling to manage work and play! Anyone know if this is true?
Brayden has missed a few trainings due to work. Joel has only missed 1 or 2 trainings. Not sure how you figure after only a few preseason trainings if they have dropped in quality. I guess Brayden hasn't scored a goal for three months so he is out of form. These two boys will have massive seasons both on the pitch and off. No need to worry about them.
Is that because you have been in the sticks Nick?
I meant in a competitive game, with a great deal of sarcasm.
Thanks for clearing that up Nick. So pretty much if no keeper arrives you will be it, if not back up!?
River Miss coming out of retirement due to Citys lack of strikers? Fact or fiction?
Funny thing is Roger is probably better than most of the strikers going around!
roger is always good for 5 or 6 penalties thanks to his great knack of being able to dive and bully the ref into believing it was a foul.... but only at mitsubishi.
Pretty sure he's bullied most teams across the state on all different grounds for that matter.
Roger, Roger he's our man if he can't fall over no one can.
saw him play many div games this yr, didnt do anything good except tuck away dodgy penalties.
I heard that rumour about Roger. Not sure how his body will stand up, but quality strikers never forget how to tuck the ball away!
Are the rumours true that Northern Rangers are struggling with numbers??? If so, are all the players from River, Knights and United going to Launy City?? If not, who have they picked up, retained or lost?
we have had consistent numbers of more than 10 each night
Not letting much up there Donk!
ive heard the baldock boys are going to Somerset and taking a few players with them, apparently they are sick of Phillip hall cheating at golf!!
T Maine? Apparently Somerset are going to be good enough to match any V League side.
I heard joel is getting a bit behind in training due to his facination in stamp collecting. Apparently kenny told him its one or the other
And apparently won't be available for pre season games due to the national stamp collecting convention
It's a shame that
I heard Hughes and McCarragher to rangers
I heard City!?
Devonport have promised a named V league squad on 15th January, which if happens is great news, players need to know early where they stand. No doubt with access to 3 other clubs in the area there will be plenty trying out. I will be very interested to see if they lose any, who are good enough for NPL but don't want to try V league, to other clubs.

Interesting! Will have to wait and see how true your comment is annon 00:16.

Dear Big C, as you can apparently predict the future can you please let me know if i will ever meet the love of my life and will she want it as much as i do.Cheers, Dane Hudson.
Hope your wife doesn't look at this site Dane
Isn,t it funny how the rumour mill wheel turns in the not too distant past there was a club in the north allegedly offering payments to players to change clubs .Now with a new league and a new coaches there is another club with cash putting offers to players, the wheel seems to have stopped turning, not even a trickle not sure how many stars can fit in one team . My tip is one coach won't see round one
the bag man is back!
Dont get more clear info please?
When do Victory league squads have to be named
Comp rules state 15th Feb.
Althought the comp rules state that you have to name the squads by 15th Feb, surely to be fair to those players that are going to miss out, City, Rangers and Port will get their squads finalised before then. The SHC starts on 17th Feb. Shouldnt those players that arent going to make the squads be given the opportunity to perhaps look at other clubs and be able to train with these clubs before the SHC.
The fact is whether youn like it or not VL is now the new benchmark comp and sides in it shouldnt have to to rush their squads to accomodate the others. What if you miss out on a players as youve rushed selection of your squad for the sake of the Hudson cup. Im sure FFT will allow those who decide to leave once the squads are announced to move on. Sure VL clubs need to be honest and let those who arent going to make it to know as early as possible so as they can decide to move on or stay and play NPL at that VL club. Worst case scenario is that an unnamed player misses week 1 of Hudson cup. Dont worry guys players who have tried out at VL will muich fitter than your NPL players anyway they have been training longer.
Waht the remaing non VL clubs need to realise is that 3 northern clubs have invested a huge amount of money to join this new marquet comp, and need to be given every chance and as much time to assess players. If i had my way it would be March 1st. A compromise has been found and Feb 15th it is
Rumour on the grapevine is that Rangers are entering their NPL team in the Hudson cup and Victory League side in Hobart Summer cup. Is this confirmed?
We have entered both comps yes, and will aim to win every game we play, the squads will b picked from the best available players each match. It would b fair to say the southern summer cup will be a particular vl focus to help these guys get used to the artificial turf we will b playing on at 2 vl venues in 2013.
A footnote to all this,is that te NPL is now not starting unitl April 6th so 3 weeks after the VL
Rumour has it old mate Grandpa is looking for a game with City's V League side next season? Any truth behind this?
After reading Annon 13:29 it has made me think. The clubs i will mention i have a hell of alot of respect for so it is not a dig at these teams. As much as i would love to see the V league be very sucesfull and last for ever i think it will flop after three years due to public support.FFT need to look at the big picture because support out side of the clubs will not and never be there.I see it like this.Apart from the teams playing on a saturday and there family members involved, The V league will not draw any more to the game.Yes games will be played on Friday nights.Just think when Ranger V Devonport on a riday night and the kick off is at say 8pm.(the problems, Its AFL season and 1 would rather sit inside with mates and have a few beers in the warmth instead of 4 degrees. 2. The players that play in the NPL the next day will not travell if they have to travell the next day.As for Sundays... Come on who the hell would want to play let alone go and watch. Look at the Womens comp played on Sundays. !0 people max.I will eat my hat and reveale my name if the V League draw more to a game than NPL games. Just look at state league footy, The country games are killing them....Annon 21:49, At the moment Nathan could walk into to City, tell them where he wants to play and choose his number and also have his beers before the game and still get in the starting 11.MR Ed
Nathan is as useful as a square wheel. I doubt he will start for any V league team and lucky to get a game in the NPL
hahaha, is this the same Nathan that 18 month ago led the defense that has the least goals scored against them? From a strikers point of view, hes in the top 5 hardest opponents i've had. never a cheap kick to be had when playing on him.pretty he isn't, effective he is. probably not going to get a game of V League, but then i doubt he cares at his age!
Doesn't count at training!
you never know, the man with the bag of money might offer Grandpa some cash to sure up the Rangers defense....ha ha....the bag man seems to be up to his old habits again contacting players promising up to $100 per game to play for Rangers. Not sure how the Rangers faithful would feel about that...let alone current Rangers players, plus how will they all fit into the 20 man squad???..could be an expensive exercise!
Anon 23 dec 2249 the biggest load of bullocks ive ever heard
not bullocks old mate - fact......just ask some of the riverside and city players who the bag man has approached.
Rangers were the ones being approached and didn't like it back a few years, rightly so.Now they turn their head the other way and pretend it's not happening.
You tell us what Riverside and City players and I'll ask them. Very big bollocks old mate!
If anyone is turning their head, it is me.... and I am not, this has not happened, ring me if you want to take it further, This is pure rubbish, that is the fact. Best I dont know who you are.
Brendan. Have just picked up this thread.I can only speak on behalf of City and can confirm that I am aware of at least 2 players that have been approached by Peter. Cheers
Who would be possibly be interested in to offer money
tony I don't dispute that, I myself have approached your players, I refute the claim that we have offered them any money. if there a players claiming we have offered them money put their name here now.
BrendanI confirmed the approach to our players by Peter.Public blog sites are not the arena to be discussing these issues, or naming players who haved confided in me. Happy to chat one on one if you wish.
firstly tony, seemed perfectly fine for you to comment in the previous post, and as my previous post stated" ring me" if you want to take it further, you were happy to proceed with a comment so why not name them, I have nothing to hide. again we are happy to accept we approached players, that is the smart thing to do, all I re iterate is we have not offered any 1 any money. end of the matter.
The facts are everyone talks and approaches players. City tried to grab Toddy a few years ago, along with players who run into each other and pubs and clubs around town, saying "why dont you come play with us"Get over it, in the end Vleague or not it is still an amateur league. We can bring out an overseas player or 2 to drink our beer and shag our women, but in the end the chances are any player wanting to come out here to play in Tassie is probably and most likley only as good as someone already here anyway. So my point is that there are only a certain amount of good players in Lonnie and with 2 teams its always going to be a bitch fight between city and rangers. On the other hand it is set up for Devonport who have 3 other sides to pick the eyes out of. Somerset, Burnie and Ulvie have become feder clubs for a grateful Devonport who havent looked liked winning the NPL or playing in a state final for nearly 5 years and have now well and truly landed on their feet and now surely must be the favourite to win the V league, if they dont then they should gice up.Eltel
Two Brazilians isnt it Tony, looking for billots?
Mr ED Maybe 1 would could sit inside with mates and have a few beers in the warmth and support the V league and also watch the AFL !! No Problems then!!V League supporter
Mr. Ed who ever you are pull ya head in and get off the blog clearly your no passionate player or supporter you can sit on ya couch in the warmth and watch the AFL but in my apinion watching real FOOTBALL is watching in live rain, hale or shine with the bois.Chilla Jr
what are you watching afl for anyway, poor excuse for a sport.you can't pay any attention to afl state league crowd figures anyway. everyone watches afl games then goes and watches the darwin which is for people who can't kick a round ball or for that matter an oval one(go and have a watch if your feeling down it'll cheer you up straight away)V league might get more or less maybe even the same, even with a bigger presence in the media.THE ONLY WAY THE QUALITY IS GOING TO GET BETTER IN THIS STATE IS WITH BETTER COACHES MAINLY JUNIOR COACHES TEACHING BETTER TECHNIQUE, GAME SENSE AND SO ON.massive junior participation but not a flow on why is that not a priority for fft? Easier "known" pathways to get into afl and basketball may make it harder also.
Mark Poulson carrying the water bottles for City's Victory League side next year.
My understanding is that he was trying to move to a succesful v league club but commuting to Hobart was an issue due to family commitments.
What the ??
i think Anon 19:05 is trying to say that there wont be any successful V league clubs from the north.
gee harsh call....devonport and rangers will be right up there I'd have thought, with City maybe mid table. Rumour has it Glen Knights and Olympia struggling for players - suggest that they will fill the bottom couple of rungs.
Having witnessed previous forays into a State League, and expecting Devonport to pick up the best available cattle from the North West I would expect them in this campaign to be very successful. My concern would be that their resolve will again be tested beyond those that saw them volountarily exiting the previous league. Maybe they should look at sponsor monies as a bonus and set about raising everyday expenses as those that all clubs raise internally. ( I expect that will get a comment).Everyones pet hate and mine Juventus will be hard pressed to win a chook raffle. Not that i dont believe they dont do everything right at junior level, they do however lose the plot after that. The photos of this years management and coaching panel will give all an indication of whom are pivotal at this club, not a mention about veterans staying on ( Macri Frost and others ).Saville as nominated by others as the money man, has a desire to see his team succeed , he was kicked out by city.He now appears at Rangers, and will display the same desire to succeed. Not a fan down there either , but they have entered this league to win it, and have no previous scars. I do expect them to carry on as a major player.Good luck to those teams involved , reprtesent the north well.
Thanks for your feedback anon. I feel it appropriate to respond. I agree with someof your comments, but there are some inaccuracies that I will clear up. At City we have been working hard at rebuilding an aging playing list over the last 2 years by blooding talented juniors into the senior system, so I am agreeing that this is an area where we have not been successful at and will continue to work at. All of our coaches , committee and volunteers are pivotal to our club both in their specifc roles and as role models to the 300 plus kids at our junior club. At the time I released that press release about the coaching appointments, I felt it premature to name players, be they existing such as Ant Macri or Michael Frost, or the others that we have seen at training. Both Ant and Michael, along with numerous others have been great loyal servants to City over many years and we would like to see them involved at the Club moving forward. I will be releasing information regarding our squads during the next few weeks, suffice to say, we are excited about welcoming at least 2 overseas players to City, who will arrive in February. This will continue a tradition started at our club back when the original state league started back in 1978 and will bring great excitement to Victory League and football in general. Peter Savill was not kicked out of City. He chose to resign from his role as reserves coach at the start 2012. I was present when he tendered his resignation. As a life member of our club he has contributed a great deal and we wish him well in his future endeavours, where ever that may be. Peter had been part of the City structure during the 80's and 90's and again in the last 2-3 years. He will always be welcome at City. The game will be benefit from having Peter involved in one way shape or form.
Hope there better than Throup he wouldnt get a kick in the VL
Throup in 2010 was a standout...ate too many pies and struggled in 2011 with fitness form and injury !!
Saville - desire to succeed? A great player in his day. Agree. A great coach - may be not. He may have the desire the flap the cash all over the place but in all reality he would have to be one most unsuccessful victory league coaches in Tasmania - has not won a cracker as a player or as a coach. Saville dictated city's long ball style for many years.city's most recent titles in 2000 and 2005 were under different coaches I think- Davey Craig and ken Morton? Interesting to see how he fits in a ranger land?!
anon 18.26, bud did you just read what you wrote?I don't think you have spoken to peter for some time going by those comments. How can he be one of the most unsuccessful coaches in the vl when it hasn't started yet?I believe that he has won the odd medal, cup and league before as a player.silly.
Ithink Lugin coached the 2001 tema, mullet an all
That should have read I think Luigi coached the 2001 team, mullet and all
Cristy to CityMcCarragher to Rangers
Devonport to announce V League squad on 15th? (tomorrow)Who is coaching Burnie? How are non VL lonnie clubs going for numbers? Coastal 3 may struggle.Early predictions should see 3 VL clubs top 3 in NPL.
Nigel,Last I heard Burnie had secured the services on your coach from last year?Knights will be strong in NPL, lost no one, probably picked a few up.How are you guys traveling?
Reading B.U.news today saw that Ray Parke has been appointed senior coach captainPC
Will need to pick up a few if they are to be strong, as last seasons side wasn't crash hot. They'll be right though if that fella plays that lead the best defence Tassie has seen to a premiership. Somerset and Ulverstone will be up there.
Well I am waiting for Port, Andrew promised that they would name squad members today. We have lost 7 seniors from last year so boy we have started from a long way back as we only had 5 oldies playing ressies last year.New coach has recruited strongly but we are still a few short (won't be the only ones, hard to pluck 3 new teams out of a 9 team comp without hurting it.) and no intention of offering incentives to regain players, at this stage anyway :)Also we are short committee members so I have called an open meeting on 30th for club members to decide future, especially this year. John B is coming up from Hobart and I hope some councillors will attend. Owning our own facilities is becoming unviable due to rising costs; insurance, rent, power, cleaning, maintanence and now water charges. We have until 3rd Feb to nominate teams so we'll see.Knights can be as strong as they like but 3 VL teams will have huge strengths, 5 VL players, 3 best over age players and 3 best under 20'sAt least 1 other will be in top 4 so hope for us all :)Good news is pitch looks fantastic, totally rebuilt and topped and should hold up really well this year.Captain, I like this blog and as club president will try to answer queries where and when I can.Cheers
Good On ya Nigel, not all beer and skittles @ VL clubs though, you come up with 5 VL players (providing no one gets injured, suspended ect) plus the back up keeper will be on the bench week in week out, so we are down to 4 on a good day. Our three best over age players all played reserves last year at this point, so no threat there. OUr best under 20s, most are under 16, going to be a huge challenge for us, on a bad week, we may have at best an under 18 side in the NPL, depending on who we draw that week, they could come off worse for wear and scar them for a while. on a good day, yes we will be competitive. Our main problem will be we could have our 3-5 players in the VL that cant get on a park, whilst our league 1 dont have enough players to field 11. The restrictions will cost us players at both ends of the spectrum, mark my words, at coaching meeting tonight it was clear, young players just want to play football, 15 minutes here and there will have them walking away from the sport. Very tricky to manage. Rules have been made with little thought process. At the end of the year, we will have a chance to see who was right... and that will be judged on how far forward we moved, or how far back we fell.We will do our best with what we have!
I'm interested to know what rules you are referring to that are making it hard? from what I know about the rules they seem fair for everyone. I would have thought that if every club could keep all their players happy then rangers might not be where they are now?Maybe there should have only been one club in Launceston in VL for the first year or 2 and then built on that. That would make life only easier for player numbers, coach numbers and also refs. a bit of slap in the face to Ulvy when they are saying they don’t have enough players and you are complaining about having to many?good luck to all clubs in 2013, don't forget there would be no VL without a healthy NPL
Who said Ulvy will struggle with numbers?
Re read the post Anon, I am not say we have too many, I am simply saying, there will be good young players who cant get a game because of the restrictions on the VL squad.I am not ignorant to the plight of non VL clubs, and I have argued on their behalf time and time again, I understand that with no NPL, the VL will fail. Dont forget that we are still in the NPL, and we have a vested interest in the success of the comp and clubs in that comp.I have long argued that the State League is over complicated and riddled with Red Tape, there are some excellent concepts and designs, there are some ill thought out rules and regulations, but at the end of the day, we must work towards a vibrant and sustainable state league, or we will simply won’t move forward.I am not trying to be arrogant towards the NPL clubs not in the Victory League, but simple letting Nigel know, its not plain and easy sailing as a V-League club, as he in a round about way suggests
Wooaa...I didn't suggest for a minute that running any club is easy :) all I am saying is that with 5 VL players dropping back each week, VL NPL teams should be very strong.I hear and understand your problems with players sitting the bench each week, however you have the numbers to rotate them and you don't have to have a full bench each week, I would use just 3 with 1 player in squad able to be sub goalie if needed. We played for a lot of years with only 2 subs. No doubt you will suffer injuries and player unavailability but you will have the benefit at home games with having your NPL at home too.Had you have no restrictions on squad numbers then I fear that we would have lost many more to 'Port. On another note I see Burnie have resurrected Ray Parke as senior coach again, great to see Darren Purton step up a level. Information is that they haven't a Div 1 coach due to player shortage?
Well I blame FFT formely known as Soccer TAS for letting another club form straight on the back of club that had folded. Too many clubs/teams and not enough players, in Launceston anyway!
Can't agree. 7 junior clubs in the NTJSA and in excess of 1500 young players. Nothing wrong with 5 senior clubs in Launceston, just need clearer pathways and greater player retention. Rangers wanted a 2nd under 18 team in 2011 and couldn't get permission, so lost players. What do you think will happen if you have 4 clubs in Launceston? Less clubs is less players. Very basic stuff.
Anon 31 Dec 2012 19:18, Mmmm……..interestingly you mention Ports voluntary exit from the last State League, if memory serves me correct this was greeted with an expulsion from Soccer TAS now FFT for any future State League Competition that may have started up again in the future for a period of 2 years I believe? Can anyone explain how this was overcome now they are part of the V League?
maybe it was because of Her Royal Majesty the Queen of England giving a pardon in 2000.... but still something that Im sure wasnt discussed or thought of when the applications were considered..Anyone know of Devonports squad as yet??? Should be an extremely strong team.
I have heard only 3rd hand, c.eaves (gk) smith (gk) a. Foote, n.gratton, b.chilcott, b.denahe, b.eaves, b.foote, j.stone, d.mcginn. B.mann, c.mckenna, wilsons x2, s.ashdown, m.holden, some other young ones. Can anyone confirm?
If that is Devonports squad they will be the whipping stick just like City will be, you have one injury in that squad and they will sink quicker than the titanic. It's good they have boys in their side for the future but after the big spread they had in the advocate, coach McKeena saying the title is in sight is as big a statement as Norwich winning the EPL.
Anon 00:39.. are you on serious drugs?.. that right there is a very very good squad..The only potential weak link is the Goalkeeper, however, there just arent a huge amount of quality keepers coming through the ranks.Good on Casey for having a crack in the V-League, and there will be 10 other blokes infront of him to protect their goals. As a keen watcher of the game I am keen to see how the V-League goes even though my club didnt get a gig.
Not on drugs 21:07,My point is, what happens if a key player like shack gets injured, the depth of senior player is not there to replace him. Next thing the wheels are off the cart and Devonport are screaming they want out of the state league again. I couldn't agree more with kasey, he is a great keeper, BUT still a weak squad in mine and many other opinions. They will finish 6th, remember that
Devonport won't go screaming & want out of the Victory League 'again' because there is now a level playing field as far as finances goes with all clubs having equal costs. We left previously because there was a huge risk to our clubs longevity due to us having considerably higher costs than every other club (namely transport). I'm sure other clubs would've done the same had they been in that position. Those mentioning an expulsion/suspension still existing don't know what they're talking about so best to give up now! I know what happened & what the penalty was - it was finalised over a decade ago....move on!As for our squad, I don't mind others not rating us. It'd be nice if they had the sack to say what club they were from so we could keep an eye on their progress though. Captain, you must have been doing the occasional drive by because you've done very well with your '3rd hand info'! We have nothing to hide with our squad but will name it officially as per FFT's requirements. Plenty of other clubs are playing their cards close to their chests & that's fine. Good luck to them. Looking forward to a great year of football!Chris McKenna
00:39I don't know if you realised or not but you forgot to leave your name with your comment..... so currently it is posted as an anonymous comment that no one would take seriously. Just thought I'd let you know.
just wondering is this post could be put to the top of the page as there are still rumours to come and comments to be made no doubt

Just how many players in Dev squad are senior senior players. If they have no depth of senior player ?????????????????????????????????????????????
Donk or Sam, move this thread to top again, rumours starting to flow one would think, with eb 15th Victory league squad deadline approaching
Brady grey won't be playing as he is in the AFL Tas under 18 state academy
