Quality Finishing Sees Devonport Return To The Top

It was a goal scoring master class by Devonport this afternoon at Cardigan St. The appropriately named Strikers put 7 quality goals past the Sharks, who could only manage 2 in return.

Devonport dominated early but were unable to put one on the score sheet. Kieran Mulraney opened the scoring after about 25 minutes with a well taken goal past the hapless keeper. The only problem was it was his own keeper he slotted it past. Somerset's lead lasted about a minute however when Chris McKenna dispatched a 25 metre free kick into the top left corner. McKenna scored his second shortly after with a delicious volley from the edge of the box that dipped beautifully over the 'Big Deal' in goals. Mulraney made up for his earlier boo-boo when he pounced on a ball that somehow made it through a Dev player, a Shark player and the keeper and tapped it into the empty net. Bobby Eaves pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time to keep Somerset in it after his original shot was bloked. Devonport went into the break with a 3-2 lead.

Only one side came out for the second half really and it appeared that both Bobby Eaves and Chris Smith were carrying injuries. Rob McDonald showed he knew how to finish when he drove a shot from the edge of the area into the bottom right corner. McKenna finished off his hat-trick with a quality header to put the game beyond doubt. Mulraney went on to finish off his hat-trick of sorts when he finished well past an advancing keeper after it looked like his touch was going to be too strong. McDonald put the last goal in after he drove a shot from a similar spot as his first, however this time it took a deflection on the way in. Final score 7-2. Even the most one-eyed Shark supporter would have to admit they were totally outclassed today. Somerset will use the week off to rest some sore bodies and bounce back stronger after the break.

The highlight of the game was Chris McKenna's hat-trick. All three goals were from the top draw and worth the price of admission alone. Only injury will stop the McKenna juggernaut from once again taking out the leading goal scorers award for the league.

  2. I think it's 4 & none today. Why do you ask? Jealous?? Someone has to take them if they're given dont they?

  3. So what if he has taken 5? It's probably more like 3 or 4...either way he now has 16 altogether. Has scored against every team this year. There are teams that haven't scored against every other team! Best striker in the comp and GDM favourite!

  4. Dev gave us a lesson in the second half but we were with them at half time. We didnt come out to play in the second half. There weakness is out wide and def there 2 backs. they are to strong through the middle of there team. I think they will win the legue or come second to prospect

  6. Big call I feel its a bit early to predict any certainties dev score well against weeker sides but will need to get over knights and rangers who are both equal to dev if not better then them across the part.

  7. Prospect chances for the title have ended with Wilson going overseas. Race in two between Rangers and Devonport for mine.

  8. Agreed 0:48 dev do have some class players but they are not good agaist quick speed players. if mckenna goes down before the end of the season injured they will not win. rangers have more gifted technial players and prospect have good midfielders. dev have to win both games away at the end of the year. tough ask.

  9. Last Round of the season could be a good old fashion block buster with Rangers Playing Ulverston and Prospect Playing Devonport. While Ulvie wont be able to win it at that point, Rangers may still be in the hunt, while its almost certain that Prospect And Devonport will still be fighting it out as well, and both may yet rely on the result at the NTCA!!! I hope from a nutrel point of view, its still on the line in round 18!

  10. Good thing about this season with 6 rounds to play you have 3 teams all with their destiny in their own hands. Devonport and Rangers for them familiar territory as they have been in this position for last few seasons. New for Knights, who have been close a few times, but never real challengers for the title, this year they are, how will they handle it.

Knights have a week off to prepare themselves for a huge game at Harley on July 2nd against Rangers.

  11. Wouldnt write off Knights they have 2 quality keepers in Bardwood and Innis.

I am not a Knights supporter by the way, they probably have the best keeping stocks of all clubs in the north if not the state

  12. You cant beat pooley at rangers as far as keepers go and Keep from Devonport is playing his first year and holding senior position down quite well.
