In Memory of Alex Rubel

Mark Egan offered these words about last Saturday's tragedy.

Travelling back from our game against Burnie last Saturday two of my players were involved in a tragic accident near Hagley. Alex Rubel a lad out here from France died at the scene, the driver Brendan Daley from NSW received serious injuries but is out of hospital and resting in the house the pair shared as students of the Maritime College in Launceston.

Needless to say the Club has been hit very hard, with so many of the playing group under eighteen it will take some time to come to terms with the situation, the Club has sought the assistance of counsellors to help them deal with it.

Alex who had been out with a hamstring injury was due to make his return this weekend against Devonport at Birch Avenue. His final game before he was due to return to France would have been the following week against Ulverstone. He informed us at Montello that the College had offered him a three year scholarship, he was looking forward to returning to Tasmania with his French girlfriend and help the Club get off its knees.

As you can imagine our game this weekend will be an emotional one. The playing group will decide tomorrow night if there will be a tribute of some description, given we have such a young group they may choose something more fitting to the age group, either way I just wanted you to have an idea that something will take place.

Regards,

Mark Egan.

  2. From all at Northern Rangers, as I have passed on personally to Cally and Mark, our deepest sympathy, and as a club we hope you guys are able to find comfort in the mate-ship and all that it is to be involved in a club. As offered, anything Rangers can do to support or lessen the burden in someway, you know all that you need to do is ask, I never knew him personally, but can hear in your voices and tributes, Alex was a great part of your club and will be sorely missed. All the best this weekend lads. Just work your guts out for Alex and hold your heads high no matter the end result.
